We headed west after visiting our son‘s family, making a short 4-hour drive to Suwannee River Rendezvous Resort, near Mayo, Florida. We arrived on a Wednesday, afternoon and departed the following Sunday morning.
The campground is located just above the Suwanee River. The word ‘Suwanee” is familiar from the song Way down upon the Suwanee River. Well, it turns out that isn’t the actual title of the song. The 1935 song title is actually Old Folks at Home and it is the State Song of Florida. Who knew? We did spend some time along the Suwanee River which was a short walk from the main camping area.
It was a slow flowing, quiet, dark watered river that was partially fed by a rather large crystal clear spring located adjacent to the campground office. They are a Passport America Participant, and they offered a military discount. So our average cost was $25@ night +tax.
They had a couple unusual activities, Pigeon Races and Chicken Poop Bingo. We participated in both and won neither, LOL. The pigeon race started with the selection of you very own pigeon racer from a flock of perhaps 40 pigeons. Paid your $5 entry fee, they recorded the leg band info and then placed the selected pigeon into their limo, shown below. They drove them about ten miles out and released them. They paid for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and last place. The 1st pigeon beat the limo back to the pigeon coop finish line.
The Chicken Poop Bingo? We’ll just leave that to your imagination… LOL
We enjoyed our time there. It was relaxing and relatively quiet.
Next stop, Tyndall AFB Fam Camp near Panama City, Florida.
