We thought we’d share our plans for 2018. By year’s end, we can look back and see how close we came to accomplishing all of this…LOL. So without further ado here is a bit of a preview of our 2018 travel plans.
We have spent the 2017-2018 Winter at our Winter home for the last two years, Torrey Oaks RV & Golf Resort, near Bowling Green, Florida. It has been an enjoyable winter with lots of activities and some fantastic friends. We have been steadily planning our 2nd Summer full-timing travels, and currently, we plan to depart Torrey Oaks in mid-March. Our plans are rather ambitious; however, we’ve allowed ample time for exploring and relaxing, at least we hope we have.
Our first stop will be a couple hours north of Bowling Green, near Ormond Beach, Fl. to have a bit of remodeling completed on our motorhome, at Classic Coach Works. Next, we have booked a two-week stay at Pelican Roost RV Park in Mayport, FL. We are looking forward to spending some time with our youngest son and his wife. Our son is serving with the Navy near Jacksonville. By the end of April, we will head west with visits to Aviation Arbor to explore New Orleans, then continuing westward with visits to the Sea Rim State Park
for some camping on the beach and then on south to Matagorda Bay Nature Park, both parks are on the Texas gulf coast. After our Gulf Coast visits, we’ll spend a couple weeks in mid-May at Fort Sam Houston, TX to visit friends.
From Ft Sam, we’ll head north with stops at Goodfellow AFB and Oasis RV Resort in North Texas. By early June, we should be at an interesting campground in Guymon, OK – The Corral Drive-in RV Park. Yes, a campground that is a drive-in theater! So, we get a nightly movie with our stay, hope it’s a western! Either way, it should be interesting. We then continue northward to Dodge City, KS with an obligatory stay at the Gunsmoke RV Park then onto Atwood, KS, and Gering, NE before arriving at Ellsworth AFB and a visit to the Mount Rushmore area.
From Mount Rushmore, we head west toward Yellowstone with three stays around the park. First on the eastern boundary of Yellowstone in Cody, WY at the Rex Hale USFS campground. Next, we move to the west side of Yellowstone at the Yellowstone Grizzly Campground over the 4th of July, and we finish our visit to the area with a stay at the southern end of Yellowstone near the Grand Tetons at the Longhorn Ranch Campground.
We then move a bit further south and spend time at Hill AFB campground located just north of Salt Lake City, UT. After Hill AFB, we move to several campgrounds in southern Utah, where we plan to explore the Mighty 5 parks in Utah. (Canyonlands National Park, Arches National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Zion National Park.) We also plan to visit the Kodachrome State Park while in the area as some friends have told it is not to be missed.
Mid-August we should arrive for a month of R&R in Las Vegas while staying at the Desert Eagle RV Park on Nellis AFB. Tim has a bit of an Army Advanced Individual Training (AIT) reunion scheduled while in Vegas, with men he went to AIT with in 1976 at Fitzsimons AMC in Aurora, CO. It will be great to see old friends.
Mid-September we proceed south to our first visit to the Grand Canyon area. After the Grand Canyon, we join our first Special Military Active Recreational Travelers (SMART) caravan to attend the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta
with a follow-on trip to Santa Fe, NM. The caravan ends in mid-October and we plan to winter somewhere in the Southwest, location(s) to be determined. We’d appreciate any suggestions on your favorite place to winter in the area. We will try to keep this site up-to-date as we progress, please post any comments, suggestions or questions.
Safe travels everyone and we hope to see you at an RV resort near us!
