I realize that I am a bit behind on our posts, so let me hit the highlights. We remained parked at Torrey Oaks RV Resort and participating in the full set of activities it affords. Stephanie has been extremely engaged in the day-to-day activities. She has been going to the daily workouts at the Fitness Center, Yoga, Walking, Water Aerobics & Line Dancing classes while also participating in the weekly Warm up America and the local Sewing/Quilting for Charity group and golf classes. One of the highlights of our time here at Torrey Oaks has been some golfing. Stephanie has never held a golf club before and has started out very nicely. Stephanie on […]
So after a couple day visit with our son and Liberty, we set out on our final leg southward. We had decided to spend this winter at our site in Torrey Oaks RV & Golf Resort just north of Wauchula, Florida. We had moved IKE here for the winter last year while we both worked full-time. We would fly down about one week each month and spend some time in the sun and warmth. We really enjoy this campground and look forward to spending this winter here.
So after 5 days cooling our jets while our windows were defogged, we headed north to visit our youngest son, and his dog Liberty. We reserved a site at Camp Blanding, which is about 16 miles from our son’s home in Green Cove Springs. This was our first visit to Camp Blanding, and we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at our site. Very nice large full hook up 50 amp site right next to the lake. The per day fee was $24.75 if you have no pets, I think the pet fee was $3 a day for each, a maximum of two. We got to spend some time with our son, went […]
Stephanie is a big Carrie Underwood fan. And our 33rd Wedding Anniversary was this month…and Carrie Underwood was scheduled to perform at the Amelie Arena while on her Storyteller Tour and since we were camped out with nothing to do just 45 minutes north at Suncoast Designers having our windows defogged, we decided to splurge and reserved a couple of Club Seats for that performance. We enjoyed the concert, the tickets gave us access to a “CLUB” area which had several serving lines with Steamship round and or desserts etc, and oh yeah free drinks. A good time was had by all and we got home unscathed around midnight.
During the two years we’ve owned IKE, slowly but surely, many of our windows have developed condensation between the dual panes of glass. We did some research, considered replacing or repairing them. Found two places east of the Mississippi, namely Dr. Fog in Arkansas and Suncoast Designers on the gulf coast of Florida that specilize in defogging RV windows. After speaking with both vendors, we decided on Suncoast Designers, in part because they were not that far out of our way and because their price was a bit lower ($225 per windows vs. Dr. Fog’s $250 per window) and their pro-rated lifetime warranty on their work. So we had an appointment for […]
We continued south from Weston Lake and our next planned stop was the Eagle Hammock MWR Campground located on the Naval Submarine Base at Kings Bay, Georgia. We reserved a Lake Front Site, and the accommodations were very nice. Full hook-ups, including Satellite TV, and free laundry. We meet several great folks while there, all veterans, and very friendly. Several of us got together and went to Appleby’s for our free Veterans Day meal and a couple beers. Also, we meet several families who were heading to Torrey Oaks as their next stop. So we’ll be seeing them again later this winter. We had a very nice stay at Eagle Hammock, and […]
While staying at Weston Lake we had the opportunity to spend some time with some friends that “once upon a time” lived in Maryland, Curt & Tina. We decided to try the Cowboy Brazilian Steakhouse in downtown Columbia. Stephanie and I had experienced one other chain of Brazilian Steakhouses, the Fogo de Chao locations in San Antonio and Baltimore. We were extremely impressed with the Fogo De Chao, food, service and atmosphere. The Cowboy was not quite on par with Fogo De Chao. However, we enjoyed our meal (thanks Curt!), and then decided to take a walk across town to the Twisted Spur Brewery for a night cap. The following night Curt […]
While at Weston Lake Campground we traveled about 30 minutes south to visit the Congaree National Park. We walked only part of the elevated boardwalk, as part of it was damaged during hurricane Matthew. The most interesting thing was the tremendous loblolly pine trees. They claim there some loblolly trees within the park that are 12-15 stories tall. We didn’t see any that tall but we did see some very tall ones. Much of the area was cover in standing water. And to add to the confusion there is another “Weston Lake” within the park, Ha! It was all free, the one downside was the mosquito population was overbearing, we bought some repellent […]
While at Weston Lake we visited the South Carolina state capitol building and explored some of the Vista area of Columbia. We had great weather and enjoyed a short film explaining the history of the building. South Carolina State Capitol Building We had a nice day for our visit and had a quick lunch, before heading back to our coach.
Our next stop on our trek south was at the MWR Campground near Ft Jackson SC. Tim and his Brother-in-law Dan had stayed here one other time and thought it was a convenient location and nice accommodations. So we reserved a week-long stay, to visit with our friends Curt & Tina and explore a bit of the Columbia SC area.
